17 BEST Waterproof Walking Shoes For Women [2023] (2024)

TL;DR: The best waterproof walking shoes for women are the Olukai Wao shoes and the Allbirds Wool Runner Mizzles. These two shoes provide the best combination of comfort, versatility, and waterproofness.

I don’t know about you, but I walk everywhere.

Walking is my favorite way to take a mid-afternoon break from work, explore a new city, or stay active while taking in the scenery at a slower pace.

17 BEST Waterproof Walking Shoes For Women [2023] (1)

It’s so important to have a good pair of waterproof shoes that keep feet dry even on the rainiest of days.

Traditional rubber boots are cute and all but if you want more support and versatility, or you want to pack light for that upcoming trip, they’re just not as practical.

So, leave the classic Wellington boots at home and check out these functional and stylish waterproof shoes for every budget.

#1 Olukai Wao

Best Waterproof Shoes for Europe

17 BEST Waterproof Walking Shoes For Women [2023] (2)

Time for the most stylish waterproof shoes for women: the Olukai Wao. These are the best waterproof sneakers for women who want a comfortable but sophisticated look.

The water-repellent leather upper is inspired by a legendary Hawaiian voyaging canoe.

And the memory foam insoles keep your feet comfy as you get those travel steps in.

As a bonus, there’s no heel, which is important for European travel (the ancient cobblestone streets in Europe are gorgeous but dangerous for the ankles).

Thanks to the waterproof leather upper, the Olukai Wao serves as the perfect alternative to flats in the fall, winter, and spring.

Unlike casual slip-on sneakers, I just recommend retying these shoes when you put them on to prevent the heel from breaking down.

If you want something even more stylish, look no further than Olukai’s slightly more dressy, Hawai‘iloa Manu Hope.

Pros

  • Stylish with any outfit
  • High-quality leather and stitching
  • Can handle light rain and light slush
  • Non-slip outsoles that are good for wet surfaces

Cons

  • They run narrow, so consider ordering a half-size up
  • The Nubuck leather will show stains, so take care of them

#2 Allbirds Women’s Wool Runner Mizzles

Best Water-Resistant Walking Shoes

17 BEST Waterproof Walking Shoes For Women [2023] (3)

I’ve become a huge Allbirds convert in recent years, now owning four different styles of their shoes.

And these cozy Allbirds Women’s Wool Runner Mizzles are the best water-repellent walking shoe option.

Designed with active people (and regular walkers) in mind, these water-repellent shoes are ergonomically crafted for the utmost comfort, arch support, and flexibility.

They’re sustainably made and the best women’s rain shoes if you need something machine washable.

Because of the overall support they provide, especially around the heel, they’re also great for anyone with plantar fasciitis and other foot issues that need more structure and cushioning.

Wool Runner Mizzles aren’t fully waterproof, but I’m including them because they’re such reliable everyday shoes and the wool makes them water-resistant.

Looking for more Allbirds styles? Read my detailed Allbirds review, Allbirds Tree Runners review, Allbirds Wool Loungers review, Allbirds Flats review, and Allbirds Tree Dashers review.

Pros

  • Very comfortable and supportive
  • Cushioned heel
  • Sustainably made with Merino wool
  • Machine washable with water-proof material, so don’t worry about the water-resistant finish washing off
  • No-slip outer soles
  • Not too expensive

Cons

  • Only water-repellent, not fully waterproof
  • The wool can get a little warm on hot days or if you’re doing strenuous activities (but if also feels like a cloud)

#3 Loom Waterproof Sneakers

Best Everyday Waterproof Sneakers

17 BEST Waterproof Walking Shoes For Women [2023] (4)

Let’s say you’re curious about Allbirds’ Merino wool, but you really need something that’s waterproof, not just water-resistant.

Loom Waterproof Sneakers are made of cruelty-free Merino wool woven for 100% waterproofness.

The snug fit of Loom shoes even prevents water from seeping in at the ankle. They’re advertised to keep your feet wet for 30 minutes of submersion.

I haven’t tried full submersion, but I think it’s safe to say they’re the best women’s walking shoes for rainy weather.

Merino wool is also an excellent material because it’s naturally anti-microbial, which helps prevent odors after the shoes get wet.

Unfortunately, they only come in whole sizes. If you normally wear half sizes, Loom recommends sizing up.

They also tend to run narrow, but the men’s version is a little wider than the women’s and looks almost identical.

Pros

  • Made of merino wool outer and in-sole
  • 100% waterproof, even when submerged
  • Affordable
  • Machine washable
  • Cruelty-free and no animal testing
  • Simple, attractive design

Cons

  • Not as much cushioning as Allbirds
  • Returns are a hassle
  • No half-sizes

#4 Tropicfeel Geyser

Best Waterproof Sneakers for Travel

17 BEST Waterproof Walking Shoes For Women [2023] (5)

You may have seen ads for Tropicfeel Geyser models splashing through knee-deep streams and swimming in the ocean with their shoes on.

So, what’s up with these cute sneakers?

Tropicfeel Geysers come in five variations of white, green, and grey. They have a hip Rebok aesthetic and are super versatile.

Just like Allbirds and Loom, these shoes are made with Merino wool. But, Geyser waterproofing mostly comes from a membrane constructed with recycled polyester and elastane.

They’re not machine washable because soaps damage the PU coating.

They do a good job of keeping your feet dry, and the wool adds warmth on cold adventures.

I like these as travel shoes because they really fit in on the trail or exploring a city.

Keep in mind that these are advertised as the only shoes you’ll need to pack. As with any shoe, it’s going to break down faster if you’re wearing it every day.

Some customers have complained about the seams ripping earlier than they should for a shoe at this price point, so just make sure to check the construction of the shoe when you receive it.

Fortunately, Tropicfeel is made by and for travelers. Their goal is to create the best travel shoes and they take customer feedback into account when updating the designs.

Check out the Tropicfeel Canyon if you’re hyped about swimming shoes. Those are lighter weight and geared more toward swimming.

Pros

  • Stylish
  • Materials are fully waterproof
  • Built for colder climates
  • PU coating adds waterproofness
  • Faux leather trim looks good, but isn’t derived from animal products
  • Designed to replace the need for hiking boots, so good tread

Cons

  • There have been reports of the stitching coming undone after only a few wears
  • Not machine washable

#5 On Cloud 5 Waterproof Shoes

Best Waterproof Athletic Shoes

17 BEST Waterproof Walking Shoes For Women [2023] (6)

If you want that sporty look without soaking feet when it’s wet out, the On Cloud 5 Waterproof Shoe is a great option. Plus, these shoes are very packable.

You can choose between three neutral color schemes that match any capsule travel wardrobe.

Cloud 5 waterproof material is known to be stiffer than the other shoes on this list. The upper is made of 100% recycled material, though.

The On Cloud 5 also has good traction and an 8mm heel-toe drop to propel you forward.

On Cloud sneakers are Swiss, so you also have to take European sizing into consideration. I’m normally a size 10 wide, but I’m an 11 (Euro 42.5) in On shoes.

That said, I love the high arches of On Cloud shoes. And the Swiss-Engineered CloudTech cushioning is like walking on clouds.

I wore my last pair of On sneakers daily for about 4 months, at which point, the cushion fully broke down and became uncomfortable. I’m happy with the lifespan, considering how much I wore them.

Pros

  • 100% recycled waterproof upper
  • Comfortable for walking
  • 8mm heel-to-toe drop
  • Low ankle collar for maximum freedom
  • Loop-Lock speed laces (traditional laces included)
  • CloudTech cushioning
  • Reflective detailing

Cons

  • Expensive
  • The sporty look isn’t as versatile as other shoes if you’re traveling for work
  • Stiffer material

#6 SOREL Women’s Out N About Sneaker

Best Women’s Waterproof Tennis Shoes

17 BEST Waterproof Walking Shoes For Women [2023] (7)

For a long time, the fashionable sneakers that claimed to be waterproof were just water-resistant shoes with a water-resistant finish. But not anymore!

If you don’t want to go for a bulky rain boot, these waterproof sneakers are a great alternative for their comfort, versatility, and packability.

The Sorel Women’s Out N About Sneakers have a vulcanized herringbone rubber sole for better traction and a removable plush footbed for ultimate comfort.

They’re recommended for light rainy days and although they’re designed more for urban settings, they can be used for easy to medium hikes.

These shoes run a little big, so I’d suggest sizing down. Luckily, they have half sizes available.

Lastly, they’re comfortable enough to walk for miles over smooth or uneven terrain, making them one of the best waterproof walking shoes for travel or everyday wear.

Sorel also has an Out N About Boot, which offers the same comfort with more coverage.

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Stylish and versatile
  • Comfortable enough for miles of walking around town or an easy hike
  • Good grip on the bottom

Cons

  • If you have high arches you might need additional support with an insole
  • Good for light rain

#7 New Balance Fresh Foam X 880v12 GORE-TEX

Most Comfortable Waterproof Shoes

17 BEST Waterproof Walking Shoes For Women [2023] (8)

The New Balance Fresh Foam X 880v12 GORE-TEX is another great option if you’re looking for lightweight sneakers to get you through those rainy days.

The New Balance Fresh Foam Gore-Tex sneakers are black with turquoise accents. They’re perfect to toss in an overnight bag or to wear while running errands.

The upper is made of GORE-TEX material, which creates a breathable yet waterproof barrier that will keep your socks dry while you run in wet conditions.

But style and waterproofing aren’t a trade-off for comfort. Below the removable insoles, you’ll find ultra-comfy fresh foam cushioning.

And unlike other shoes, you don’t have to worry about the foam soles breaking down. I’m listing these as the most comfortable walking shoes because the dual-layer midsole design adds double the cushion for long-term wear.

Pros

  • Waterproof GORE-TEX upper
  • Reflective detailing
  • Sizes available in regular and wide
  • Flat laces for evenly dispersed pressure across the top of the foot

Cons

  • Only one color scheme
  • Expensive

#8 Hoka Clifton 9 GTX

Best Lightweight Waterproof Shoes

17 BEST Waterproof Walking Shoes For Women [2023] (9)

Note: I’ve been testing the regular Hoka Clifton 9 shoes for six months now, which is what this review is based on. I’ll be testing the GTX version in January 2024 and updating this section once I do.

The last thing I want after a long day is shoes that weigh me down even more. That’s why I was drawn to the Hoka Clifton 9 GTX shoes.

As soon as I slipped my feet into these Hoka walking shoes, I noticed how incredibly lightweight they felt, while still providing balanced (and somewhat bouncy) cushioning and arch support. Weighing just 8.3 oz, it was like walking on clouds!

I’ve worn them on leisurely nature trails, where their grippy soles provide stability on uneven terrain, and also for all-day excursions sightseeing around cities. My feet have stayed comfortable in these shoes for miles without any pinching, uncomfortable rubbing, or fatigue.

The breathable mesh lining wicks moisture to keep my feet cool and dry, while the waterproof coated ripstop makes sure my feet don’t get caught in the rain.

The only downside is that they’re very much a “sporty” looking shoe, so their design might not be for everyone since they’re not as versatile. As someone who wears a lot of athleisure, they work just fine.

17 BEST Waterproof Walking Shoes For Women [2023] (10)
17 BEST Waterproof Walking Shoes For Women [2023] (11)

Enjoying my Hoka Clifton 9 sneakers on a Berkely hike. I’m in the process of testing the Hoka Clifton 9 GTX, and I’ll update this article with new pictures soon.

Pros

  • Lightweight and easy to pack
  • Versatile for the city or the trail
  • Made for comfort and support
  • Good grip on the bottom to prevent slips
  • Made with high-quality materials

Cons

  • Not as easy to clean, so it’s best to get the darker option
  • Can be a bit stiff at first and hard to break in but they’re super comfortable once you do
  • More expensive but GORE-TEX shoes are fully waterproof

#9 Brooks Ghost 14 GTX

Best Waterproof Running Shoes (That Are Also Good for Walkers)

17 BEST Waterproof Walking Shoes For Women [2023] (12)

Note from the Editor: We’re in the process of testing the Brooks Ghost 15 GTX, and we’ll update this article soon with our first-hand experience. If you’re ready to try something new, test the Brooks Ghost 15 GTX alongside us and leave us a comment with your experience.

While the Allbirds Wool Runner Mizzles are super comfortable, being water-repellent isn’t always enough. That’s where GORE-TEX waterproofing comes in.

If you have foot problems and need truly waterproof shoes, I would start with Brooks Women’s Ghost 14 GTX. These sneakers have the perfect balance of support and style.

They’re designed for smooth transitions at every point of your step, from landing to toe-off.

And on the inside, the DNA LOFT cushioning is squishy but supportive. They make me want to skip the bus and walk.

Plus, the GORE-TEX upper is truly waterproof. GORE-TEX material is the same thing that many rain jackets are made of.

Your feet will stay bone dry, even if you go running after your dog in the pouring rain or if you’re on your feet all day and desperate for the most comfortable waterproof work shoes.

Pros

  • GORE-TEX membrane for waterproof walks or runs
  • Toss the removable insole in the laundry
  • Extra cushion and arch support
  • Flat laces for superior comfort on the top of your foot

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Not the most stylish shoe

#10 DKSUKO Chelsea Boots for Women

Best Chelsea Boots for Rainy Days

17 BEST Waterproof Walking Shoes For Women [2023] (13)

I love a good Chelsea boot. I probably wear mine at least half of the week, whether I’m abroad or at home because they’re so damn versatile, cute, and comfortable.

Seriously, I’ve walked for hours around new cities in waterproof Chelsea boots with happy and dry feet.

These DKSUKO Chelsea Booties are stylish and comfortable. Plus, they’re inexpensive at under $30.

And even though these are cheap, they’re made with waterproof elastic and sealed rubber that goes up over the ankle.

They also have a pull loop strap at the back to slip them on and off and a dirt-resistant exterior for easy cleaning.

If you’re looking for something a little more rugged, try the Lems Chelsea Waterproof Boot. The Lems Chelsea boot is full-grain leather and has an extra-wide toe box.

Pros

  • Dirt-resistant
  • Versatile
  • Comfortable
  • Inexpensive

Cons

  • Not as tall as a traditional rainboot
  • Somewhat bulkier than other waterproof shoes on this list
  • Made of rubber, which isn’t always great for sensitive skin

#11 Planone Short Rain Boots for Women

Best Amazon Rain Boots

17 BEST Waterproof Walking Shoes For Women [2023] (14)

If you’re looking for another quality pair of waterproof women’s boots that are as cute as they are practical, look no further than the Planone Short Rain Boots.

These shoes are easy to slip on while you’re running out the door for a full day of explorations in a new place.

They’re made with quality single-layer cotton lining technology to keep feet dry, and they have great traction on the outer soles to help prevent slips.

The Planone Boots are soft and comfortable. They have a 1-inch heel and feature a partial mesh upper for more flexibility. They’re also lighter than they look for easy packing.

I especially love these shoes for muddy days because the rubber outside easily rinses clean.

Plus, I can stuff the bottoms of my pant legs inside thanks to the wide-ankle design so that they’re deep puddle-proof.

Since they have thinner soles, I’d just recommend buying some comfortable insoles for long days–especially if you have flat feet or high arches.

Luckily, they’re so inexpensive that you won’t break your budget upgrading the soles.

Overall, if you plan to be in wetter climates, these are some of the best walking shoes for rainy weather.

Pros

  • Stylish
  • Affordable
  • Great waterproof design
  • Good grip on the bottom so you don’t slip
  • Partial mesh upper for more flexibility

Cons

  • The tops can be uncomfortable on bare skin, so wear tall socks
  • Not overly supportive for high arches, adding insoles is recommended
  • Not super warm on freezing days, but great if you wear them with thick winter socks
  • The elastic is water-resistant but not waterproof

#12 Muck Boot Women’s Muckster Flat

Best Women’s Waterproof Flats

17 BEST Waterproof Walking Shoes For Women [2023] (15)

If you’re looking for waterproof shoes for women that you could wear with a nicer outfit, let me introduce these waterproof flats by Muck Boot.

Waterproof flats might sound counterintuitive because they’re open at the top and don’t protect your feet from getting wet in the rain.

But as long as you just have wet weather and you’re not in a rain storm, they’re pretty versatile waterproof flats to bring on any trip.

Plus, the cushioned footbed makes them comfortable enough for walking around a city all day.

You can get them dirty and wet all you want, wear them as convenient no-slip slip-on shoes, and easily fit them in an overnight bag.

The Muck Boot flats come in four different colors and feature non-slip rubber soles.

Pros

  • Inexpensive
  • Good traction and non-slip soles
  • Comfortable
  • Lightweight and easy to pack

Cons

  • They’re still flats so if you’re walking through rain the tops of your feet will get wet
  • They run big

#13 KEEN Women’s Whisper Sandal

Best Waterproof Walking Sandals

17 BEST Waterproof Walking Shoes For Women [2023] (16)

I bought my first pair of sandals from KEEN when I was 18 on my way to the jungles of Costa Rica.

I’ve been a big believer in the quality of KEEN shoes ever since because I wore them for over 10 years and they were still supportive and looked great after a decade.

These KEEN Whisper Sandals are some of the best shoes you can buy, whether you’re specifically looking for hiking sandals or simply supportive sandals that can keep up with an active lifestyle.

Since KEEN sandals have an open design, they won’t keep your feet completely dry if it’s raining.

However, I’m recommending them here because water won’t ruin them, and they’re great for staying upright on slippery surfaces.

You probably won’t see me running errands in these, but they’re the best waterproof shoes for walking when I need a combination hiking shoe, water shoe, and walking sandal.

Plus, the drying time is nothing compared to Converse or Reebok shoes.

Alternatively, you also can’t go wrong with Teva Sandals. I find them to be more stylish but not always as supportive as KEENs.

Pros

  • Supportive with good arch and heel support
  • Good traction and non-slip outer soles
  • Comfortable
  • Easy to slip on
  • Lightweight
  • Breathable
  • Protective bump toe

Cons

  • They have an open design so they won’t keep your feet completely dry
  • Due to their open design, it’s also easier for rocks and debris to get in when you’re walking on unpaved paths

#14 Merrell Women’s Moab 2 Waterproof Hiking Shoes

Best Women’s Waterproof Hiking Shoes

17 BEST Waterproof Walking Shoes For Women [2023] (17)

If you care more about comfort than you do about fashion or versatility, I’d recommend getting proper hiking footwear for optimal comfort.

These waterproof Merrell Moab 2 shoes are a good lightweight pick for your next adventure, especially if you plan to have a somewhat outdoorsy trip.

The best thing about this hiking shoe is the contoured insoles that have real arch support and comfort.

Plus, a heel air cushion and EVA foam help absorb shock to keep your feet happy for walking long distances.

While the Vibram soles are 100% waterproof, moisture might seep in through the mesh upper after long hikes in a rainy forest.

This really won’t be a problem, though unless you plan on walking into a lake.

And these shoes have super durable traction on the bottom that grips slick surfaces well.

This hiking shoe is one of the most reliable and best walking shoes for all-day exploring, whether you’re hitting the trail or the pavement.

Pros

  • Comfortable, good arch support
  • Great for rainy outdoor adventures
  • Good grip on the bottom
  • Made with high-quality materials

Cons

  • Not very versatile
  • There isn’t the same ankle support that you’d get with hiking boots
  • They take a while to dry, so after a full day of hiking in rain, the tops of your toes may feel dam

#15 Merrell Women’s Moab 2 Mid Waterproof Hiking Boots

Best Women’s Waterproof Hiking Boots

17 BEST Waterproof Walking Shoes For Women [2023] (18)

Note From the Editor: The Merrell Moab 2 Mid Boots are currently out of stock on REI and Merrell (they’ll be back soon!). Buy them now onAmazonor check out the newMerrell Moab 3if you’re chomping at the bit to get that unmatched REI return policy.

I’ve been wearing my Merrell Moab 2 Mid Hiking Boots for the past three years and they’re by far the best hiking boots I’ve owned yet.

In terms of waterproofness, my Merrell hiking boots were recently put to the test when I got caught hiking in a bad rainstorm during a rugged 10-mile hike. Even though I knew they were waterproof, I had never tested them to that extent before. I was pleasantly surprised by just how dry my feet still were by the end of that hike.

In addition to keeping my feet dry even in the worst rainy weather, these heavy-duty waterproof boots have an air cushion in the heel for stability and to absorb shock.

They also have great traction and a protective rubber toe cap for uneven terrain, which has been a nice feature on some of the rockier trails I’ve hiked when I inadvertently kick rocks aside.

And the high ankle design of these hiking shoes means I won’t be twisting anything anytime soon.

There’s support in every aspect of this shoe and it’s breathable enough to wear in hot or cold weather–I’ve hiked plenty with these shoes in of both types of weather.

Merrell also offers wide versions in every size so you can find your perfect fit no matter how your foot is shaped, making them some of the best waterproof shoes for wide feet as well.

The main downside to these shoes is that they’re very much hiking shoes, as in bulkier than any other shoe on this list and not very stylish. But if you’re looking for rugged durability and high-quality materials, the Moabs are hard to beat.

17 BEST Waterproof Walking Shoes For Women [2023] (19)
17 BEST Waterproof Walking Shoes For Women [2023] (20)

My Merrel Moab 2 Mid hiking boots keep my feet very dry and comfy on hikes.

Pros

  • Designed for optimal comfort
  • Good ankle support and heel cushion
  • Great for long outdoor walks and serious hikes
  • Wide options are available
  • Good grip on the bottom and a protective toe cap
  • Made with high-quality materials

Cons

  • Bulky
  • Not super versatile for wearing outside of hiking
  • Pricier (but you get what you pay for)
  • The mesh accents are water-resistant and require drying time in wet conditions (but they’ll feel waterproof unless you’re trekking through standing water)

#16 Lems Outlander Waterproof Boots

Best Waterproof Shoes for Winter

17 BEST Waterproof Walking Shoes For Women [2023] (21)

Lems Outlander Waterproof Boots are some of the most durable waterproof boots for women around.

Lems are known for their “natural, foot-shaped” toe box. These are an excellent choice if you’re tired of cramped toes.

Encouraging natural toe splay can have a lot of benefits like natural foot striking and reduced foot injuries.

The big toebox is also good for thick winter socks.

These Outlander boots offer security on snow days thanks to the hiking-boot-inspired sole with winter traction for slick surfaces and uneven terrain.

Inside, feet are cocooned in a polyester lining with an extra waterproof membrane to stay warm and dry.

Whether you have a slushy commute to work or you’re heading out for a winter adventure, Lems Outlanders are solid women’s boots for long walks.

Pros

  • Insulated interior liner for winter warmth
  • Leather trim
  • Best for average to wide feet
  • Water-resistant shoes keep your toes dry in the snow
  • Above ankle

Cons

  • Non-slip design helps in slick conditions, but shoes alone can’t solve all slippery situations

Waterproof Shoes That We Don’t Recommend

Vessi Everyday Move

Popular Brand, Unpopular Fit

17 BEST Waterproof Walking Shoes For Women [2023] (22)

I tried the Vessi Everyday Move and did most of my testing during a trip to Italy. On an aesthetic level, I wasn’t very excited about these shoes.

While I generally don’t gravitate to sportier styles, I still found the design slightly clunky.

Still, I could put my personal style preferences aside if I liked the shoes for other reasons, but they fell short for me in that regard as well.

The Vessi sneakers are water-tight when up against a shallow puddle, so I’ll give them that. But if water gets inside them, they soak it up like a sponge and take several days to dry out fully.

Walking around in them on a long summer’s day, my feet were so sweaty that they left damp footprints on the floor (and I swear—I don’t usually have issues with overly sweaty feet!). So, they’re not moisture-wicking and they’re not very breathable.

17 BEST Waterproof Walking Shoes For Women [2023] (24)

I tested my Vessi shoes by walking all over Italy. I wanted to love them, but my feet were sweatier than ever before.

Pros

  • Easy slip-on without laces
  • Sock-like fit hugs your ankle for improved waterproofing
  • Vegan materials
  • Responsive customer service

Cons

  • Not Breathable
  • Takes forever to dry if the inside gets wet
  • Clunky & less stylish than other options
  • Doesn’t come in half sizes
  • Arch support is basic–adding an insert will also help customize the shoe if you need a half-size
