Asked what advice she’d give to people considering a career in mental health nursing, Megan says you have to be prepared to be patient, empathetic, understanding and non-judgemental.She explains: “It’s a very diverse field of nursing and there's lots of dynamics. Being adaptable to every individual’s needs means thinking about how you communicate and being creative coming up with unique treatment plans. It involves a lot of problem solving and working with families and carers – there is so much more to mental health nursing than what you see on the surface.“We have an opportunity to develop strong therapeutic relationships, as we spend days, weeks and sometimes months with patients. Rob Bradley is a mental health nurse consultant. His role is to provide leadership and expert advice to colleagues in older adult mental health wards and community settings because that's his area of expertise. As part of encouraging others into the field and highlighting the variety of different jobs and opportunities out there, Rob is also keen to underline the importance of human connection. He said: "I remember when I started and a health care support worker who had been there for decades telling a patient 'you're going to get better' and at the time I thought that was obvious. But the patient met with lots of different staff, tried all sorts of different medication and treatment and when that person got better she said what she remembered is that health care support worker saying 'you're going to get better'. Just that bit of reassurance and making the link with our patients is so important and so rewarding. "Medication is often just a small part of it. You have to have that rapport, get to know somebody, see what's important to them and then build a care plan around them. That might mean meaningful routine is just as important as getting the right medication." Once someone is qualified as a mental health nurse, there are lots of different ways they can progress in their career, from getting supported to study for a Masters degree to becoming a qualified prescriber. Facing trauma in your nursing career.Have you ever felt like you have grown too fast by being in this profession?This has been a challenge at the early stages of my nursing journey in my 20s.I faced situations far beyond what peers my age typically encountered. From emergencies to traumatic events, it's very easy to feel overwhelmed. Living the death of one of my first patients was a challenging one..the first one I’ve ever encountered as a newly qualified nurse while working in a different country far from my family and close friends. It can truly be hard to navigate this alone.Through these experiences I’ve learned how vulnerable I could be and the importance of seeking support.Know that asking for help will facilitate processing those hard experiences. ✅Consider opening up with a team member, try to sit with your feelings so you can grow from the situation, attend a team debriefing related to the event to reflect on it as a team. ✅ If you need more help don’t hesitate to ask for professional support, approach a Mental Health First Aider or the staff psychology team at your Trust, to better deal with traumatic events you’ve experienced.
