Disability is not black and white – just ask the 4.4 million Australians who live with one. From dynamic (symptoms that vary in severity), to invisible (symptoms that aren’t always apparent to the outside world), living with a disability is not a universal experience – so it’s a given that travelling with one isn’t, either.

Exploration doesn’t easily go together with having a mobility challenge, but with a strong will and determination, the possibilities are endless of how far you can go. I was born with congenital muscular dystrophy and have always used a power wheelchair (My convertible as I lovingly call her) for my mobility. I loved exploring places far from where I lived and places right around the corner. The only difference in my adventures is that they were happening from my wheelchair. Here are five of my favorite wheelchair-accessible attractions in Tampa Bay:

Delta Flight Products expects the development and certification process for the product to take another year and a half. And there's no guarantee the prototype will ever come to market. Still, the design is an important early attempt to tackle a huge pain point for many flyers with disabilities who rightfully fear that their own chair could be damaged during transport and who also worry about the process of transferring into an airline chair and then into a standard seat during boarding and deplaning.

Medicare overpays for wheelchairs

Medicare does not buy wheelchairs for enrollees outright. Instead, it pays rental fees for up to 13 months, at which point the wheelchair belongs to its user. It spent $188 million on wheel chair rentals in 2009, notes the Sun-Sentinel. These are expensive items that some people rent for a few months and then don't necessarily need them," said Laurence Wilson, director of the chronic care policy group for the Center of Medicare and Medicaid Services.
