Can you tell… I really love Friday!!!

Whether it’s ordering pizza from our favorite pizza place or making our own, my family loves this weekly tradition.

Over the years I’ve shared some of our absolute favorite pizza recipes, from this Chicken Spinach Pizza, to this Corn, Prosciutto and Caramelized Onion Pizza and even this Peach, Prosciutto and Brie Flatbread Pizza.

But today’s recipe for Pepperoni Pizza Rolls probably makes its appearance the most often at our beloved pizza Fridays! This is because this Pizza Pinwheels recipe is so easy that kids can make it entirely on their own. And that’s a win win for all!

Helpful Tips and Information:

Pizza Pinwheels Ingredients:

  • Crescent Dough – Today’s pizza recipe is for Crescent Roll Pizza Pinwheels. I like using store bought crescent dough for these Pepperoni Rolls because the dough is light and fluffy, as opposed to regular pizza dough which can be denser.

Specifically, I usually usecrescent dough “sheets” instead of crescent roll dough with the perforated lines. If you use crescent roll dough with the perforated lines, make sure you pinch the lines together and roll over them with a rolling pin to seal the serrated dough completely. This will help your pepperoni pinwheels stay together better.
You could also use puff pastry dough instead of crescent dough.Another substitute for the crescent dough is store-bought pizza dough or homemade pizza dough.
  • Mozzarella Cheese – We prefer to buy a block of mozzarella cheese and grate it ourselves, but to save time, you can certainly buy pre-grated mozzarella cheese. You can also substitute an Italian cheese blend.
  • Pepperoni – We usually use turkey pepperoni; however, traditional pepperoni will work too.
  • Unbleached All-purpose Flour – This is used to help prevent the dough from sticking when rolling it out.
  • Tomato Sauce – Pizza sauce or marinara sauce can be substituted for the tomato sauce.
  • Dried Italian seasoning

How to keep the pinwheel shape while baking?

I have personally made these
Crescent Roll Pizza Pinwheels MANY times and have never had any issues with the pinwheel shape not holding up during baking. With that said, please follow these tips and the recipe exactly as written to ensure that your pinwheels come out perfectly every time.

  • I usually use crescent dough “sheets”instead of crescent roll dough with the perforated lines. If you use crescent dough with the perforated lines, make sure you pinch the lines together and roll over them with a rolling pin to seal completely.
  • Only spread a very thin layer of tomato sauce onto the dough.
  • Use a serrated bread knife to cut the dough and cut the pinwheels to be approximately 1½ inch thick.
  • You can bake the pinwheels in muffin tins sprayed with non-stick cooking spray to help them hold their shape while baking.
