Cara Cooper

Following three straight non-district losses from March 14-21, the Bassett girls tennis team has rattled off five straight match wins to improve to 7-3 on the year.

In those five wins, the Bengals have outscored opponents 40-5 in matches, and they haven’t allowed an opponent to win more than two matches in a single night.

In Thursday’s 8-1 home win over G.W.-Danville, Laken Porter, Kaitlin Hodges, Charity Whitfield, Emily Whitlow, and Payton Horsely all picked up singles wins for the Bengals, and they swept the three doubles matches.

The Bengals sit atop the Piedmont District standings with a perfect 4-0 district record. They’ll next travel to Floyd County on Monday for a 4:30 p.m. non-district match.

Here’s a look at local players of the week and what to watch on the diamonds, fields, and courts in the coming days.
