Why do we want to be diagnosed? Or diagnose someone else? With psychiatric illnesses? Are there other ways of supporting and helping people in distress that is not based on declaring them as sick, disordered or ill? Is the medical system necessary to help us understand the human condition and human stress?I don't have the answers to this - I am however often pondering them - and here I share some of my thoughts and reflections on the topic.

Today's Post is about a question: Should a patient schedule weekly therapy sessions? More and more as I continue with this work, I've come to the realization that not everyone needs to come to therapy weekly. When a patient spends their precious therapy time "reporting" on the past weeks events, they are not doing therapy, they are reporting. As a Therapist, I'm more interested on how the week's events helped to shape them. Are they using old behaviors or are they using new behaviors when challenged? Some issues like trauma and addiction need weekly sessions. As patients begin to change their reactions and their responses, scheduling every other week can work. This can lead to once a month, then a termination session and booster sessions down the road when the patient wants to work on something or sharpen the saw.
